One of the most impactful things you can do for yourself is to take full responsibility for the results in your life. Taking responsibility means fully accepting that everything that happens to you in your life is a result of your actions and your actions alone. This means to take ownership of positive events in your life as well as the negative ones. There is no getting lucky. Luck is the product of doing a lot of small things right for an extended period of time, and eventually, events fall into place as a result of your effort and action. On the flip side of this, all of your failures or shortcomings are no one’s fault but your own. This is a particularly hard pill to swallow because finding someone else to blame is so ingrained in our psychology. This blaming is just a cop-out and an avoidance of the pain of introspection. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you will take control of your life and your actions. You may say this approach is extreme, but it’s the only way to improve and allow yourself honest and humble self-examination. If you shut off after a bad result and blame others, you deny yourself an opportunity to grow.
For example, let’s say you are a salesman, and you didn’t close a sale you were working on. You have to have the mindset that you didn’t get that sale because YOU didn’t prepare correctly or work hard enough. It’s not because they didn’t like you or they didn’t understand how great of a product you have. NO! It’s your fault for not conveying to them how great your products are. It’s your fault for not being prepared and tailoring your approach for precisely what that company was looking for.
I know this seems harsh, but the alternative is to blame, and when you blame, you shut off your opportunity to grow. Next time you have a sales pitch, you’ll spend an extra hour preparing your material. Maybe you’re so motivated to improve that you read a book on negotiation and learn a valuable nugget from the book that enhances your overall sales pitch moving forward. That’s how you get closer to exceptional results. Little tiny improvements that are made possible by honest and humble self-examination.
When you take responsibility, your life will truly become your life. Taking 100% responsibility means that no one can stop you but you! If you truly want better results, then you all you have to do is get out of your own way. There’s an old African proverb that says, “If there is no enemy within, then the enemy outside can do us no harm.” This is such great truth, and once you accept this truth, you will move from scarcity to abundance, and your whole life will open up for you.
If you get an unfavorable result, force yourself to see at least one thing that you could have done differently to avoid the result and fix it for the next time. Yes, this will be uncomfortable at first, but it will become natural, and you’ll start to become the person you’ve always dreamed of being. It is within your grasp to be rich and wealthy beyond your wildest dreams; the only thing stopping you is you. Take action and realize there is no failure, only progress.
Take a moment and write down any circumstances in your life that are unfavorable. And dig deep as to what your part is in causing them. Then when you’re finished with that, take the time to think of all the success in your life and realize how that too was all your doing.
